How do I measure how much timber flooring I need?
How do I measure how much timber flooring I need?
To calculate how much timber flooring you need, follow these simple steps:
1. Measure your room
Measure the length and width in feet, going wall to wall. Be sure to include alcoves, doorways, and any small areas. Round up to the nearest half-foot to ensure you have enough material.
2. Calculate the area (square feet)
Multiply the length by the width:
Example: 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 square feet
3. Convert to square yards
Divide the total by 9 (as 1 square yard = 9 square feet):
Example: 120 ÷ 9 = 13.33 square yards
4. Add wastage
Allow extra for cuts and fitting:
- 7%–10% for standard installations
- 10%–15% for herringbone
Example:
13.33 × 1.10 = 14.66 square yards required
